I seem to remember that you’re supposed to Plant Garlic sets on the shortest day of the Year and harvest on the Longest…. or is it the other way around?

The correct answer is that it really depends where you are. We are in Yass (50km NW of Canberra) and we plant on 1st April and harvest in early November with excellent results. This is the same schedule that’s used at Allsun permaculture farm in nearby Gundaroo. You would need to vary planting times depending on your local conditions.
General advice for garlic growing is to add plenty of manure and compost to the soil before planting in a well drained location. Keep it in the ground for 7 months and harvest when stems start to fall over. Plenty of frost improves the flavour.
