What sort of business is Spiral Garden?

Spiral Garden is a family-run online business, based near Hobart, Tasmania. We stock a combination of locally handmade, fair-trade, natural, sustainable and ethically produced products for families, which inspire creativity, open-ended play and connection with nature. You’ll find quality art materials, gardening tools, toys, books, magazines, artwork and gifts. We offer shopping by appointment for Hobart locals and free local pick-up. As home educators, many of the products we sell have been road tested in our own home by our three children. We bring backgrounds in ecology and design, blended with a passion for permaculture, nature and life-long learning and Spiral Garden is really a reflection of that.

We also run seasonal interactive permaculture e-courses for families, where we explore the permaculture principles through a variety of fun and engaging activities. Our Seedlings e-course has been very popular with families and we’re soon to launch Saplings, aimed specifically at older children. We aim to get families talking, playing and learning in nature together and exploring how permaculture can fit with and enhance their daily living. On weekends you might find us wandering local bush and offering one of our workshops or rambles, looking at fungi or other treasures found in nature.

How did Spiral Garden come to be?

Spiral Garden began ten years ago in far North Queensland and was run by a fellow home educating family we befriended online. We adored the shop and were thrilled to become the new Head Gardeners when the previous owners were ready to pass it on over 3 years ago. Bringing Spiral Garden to Tasmania saw it showcase handmade local talent, while our interest in permaculture saw the permaculture ethics adopted into how the business is run. The business has grown alongside our own permaculture garden, which unsurprisingly features a giant veggie spiral at its centre!

What prompted you to stock Pip Magazine in the Spiral Garden store?

We first heard about Pip Magazine just as the first issue was about to launch. We didn’t hesitate to pop it on our shelves, knowing that many of our customers shared a similar interest in permaculture and adore beautifully produced magazines. We’re so happy to have Pip Magazine as a Spiral Garden staple and to share it with Garden Lovers all over the country!
